Oahu from the air.

Although Oahu is the more commonly known Hawaiian Island and the more popular tourist destination (with Honolulu and Waikiki being located on Oahu), the island of Hawaii, also known as the Big Island, is another popular destination for those who wish to experience the paradise of Hawaii.

The Big Island is the largest and youngest of the eight major islands that make up the Hawaiian archipelago.

According to Hawaiian legend, the island was named for Hawai’iloa, the legendary Polynesian navigator who was believed to be the first person to discover it. With a population of about 200,000, the Big Island is located in the County of Hawaii, and the county seat is Hilo, the Big Island’s largest town located on the eastern coast.

For most of it’s history, the Big Island’s main economic force was sugarcane, but today, like the rest of the State of Hawaii, tourism is the backbone of the island’s economy.

The island is most famous for its volcanoes and black sand beaches, with Hawaii Volcanoes National Park being home to the active volcanoes of Kilauea and Mauna Loa. Kailua-Kona and Hilo are the two major communities on the island, both of which offer great dining, shopping, and entertainment opportunities to residents and visitors.

Other popular attractions throughout the island include Hulihe’e Palace, Imiloa Astronomy Center of Hawaii, Onizuka Space Center, Pacific Tsunami Museum, Pana’ewa Rainforest Zoo, and Rainbow Falls State Park.

Whale Watching

If you are planning on visiting Hawaii anytime soon you will be happy to know you will never lack of things to do or activities to participate in. One activity that is becoming very popular throughout Hawaii is whale watching.

Hawaii offers spectacular while watching tours that allow you to observe the majestic Humpback Whales. Many of the islands offer while watching tours including Maui, Kauai, and Kona.  Imagine sailing across the deep waters with the sun setting as you have the chance to observe these beautiful creatures in their natural habitat.
If you are interested in a less crowded whale watching area I would recommend traveling to the North Shore which is located on the beautiful island of Oahu.  From here you can travel by sailboat a small group for an upclose and personal experience the whales.
While you may choose to go whale watching throughout the year one of the best times as during the winter months.  This is because more whales travel to Hawaii during this time to seek refuge from the cold harsh temperatures.  This allows them to bask in the warm waters of Hawaiian Islands while being observed by thousands of tourist.  Individuals travel from all of the world to participate in the seasonal whale watching.  The best months to observe these magnificent creatures is between late November to mid April.  There are a variety of whale watching excursions offered all throughout the state.  Some of which even drop microphones into the ocean so tourists can hear the whales.
Whales often choose to travel to the Hawaiian Islands to breed, nurse their young, and give birth.  Many visitors feel as though by visiting the whales in their natural habitat it gives us a better sense of what they’re really about.  You will have the chance to take photos and video footage that will capture and amaze your friends and family.
