Luaus in Hawaii

If you are planning on visiting Hawaii anytime soon you will be pleasantly surprised by whats offered here. There are many things that are offered here that you could not experience anywheres else. One thing that you must attend while visiting the beautiful majestic islands of Hawaii is a traditonal luau. A luau normally consists of a large feast and live entertainment including hula dancers and Polynesian entertainment.

In preperation for the luau those who will do the cooking begin preparing the feast early on the day the luau is expected to take place. A huge pit is dug into the beach or sand. Next Kiawe logs are then placed inside of the pit and later topped with river rocks. A fire is then started on the rocks to create hot rocks and hot coals. The rocks will then be evened out near the bottom of the pit and moistened banana stalks will be placed on top followed by another layer of banana leaves for the pig to be placed on.
Then later the laulau, sweet potatoes, and pig are placed in the imu and covered with additional ti leaves and banana leaves. Wet burlap bags may be used to add team and keep the heat packed inside. The final step is when a large tarp is placed over the pit which will be covered in sand. Within 6-8 hours the kalua pig should be ready to eat.
Many other foods are often found at luaus including chicken long rice, poi, coconut custard, lomi salmon, salads, sweet potato, variety of fish, and many other specialty items.
